CES Vai à Escola: “Rainbow grandparents: stories of resistance and diversity as tools for inclusive citizenship”. At Agrupamento de Escolas de Aveiro

The CES Vai à Escola/CES Goes to School (CVE) programme, an outreach initiative by the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra (CES-UC), brings researchers into schools and educational settings to share knowledge in social sciences, arts, and humanities. By presenting research carried out in CES, the programme stimulates critical debates on societal challenges, promotes the democratization of knowledge, advances human rights, and supports CES’s mission to build a more just, inclusive, and reflective society.

On 31 January 2025, the projects TRACE and REMEMBER participated in the “CES Vai à Escola” programme with a session titled “Rainbow Grandparents: Stories of resistance and diversity as tools for inclusive citizenship” at Agrupamento de Escolas de Aveiro. This session explored sexual and gender diversity, LGBTQI+ history, and ageing, highlighting the importance of inclusive citizenship in Portuguese classrooms. By drawing on life stories and research in sociology from CES, the initiative fostered intergenerational dialogue, encouraged critical thinking, and contributed to a more inclusive society.

Organisation: Project TRACE and Project REMEMBER, in partnership with GPS CES – Sexualities Research Group, Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra.

Team: Ana Cristina Santos, Ana Lúcia Santos, and Maria de Medeiros
