Ana Cristina Santos at the ESA RN23 Mid-Term Conference 2025: “Ageing Inside Out: Lessons on Solitude, Joy and Pride from Older Queers in Southern Europe”

TRACE Principal Investigator Dr. Ana Cristina Santos presented the paper “Ageing Inside Out: Lessons on Solitude, Joy and Pride from Older Queers in Southern Europe” at the European Sociological Association (ESA) Research Network 23 – Sexuality Mid-Term Conference, “Deviants, Sinners, and Rebels. Sexuality Studies in Times of Trouble,” held on 11–12 September 2025 at the University of Palermo, Italy.

The paper was presented in the first panel dedicated to Sexuality and Ageing and drew on qualitative research with older LGBTQI+ people in Southern Europe. It challenged deficit-based approaches to ageing by foregrounding narratives of solitude, joy, pride, and resilience, and by emphasising the emotional and political dimensions of later life.
