1st International Forum on LGBTQI+ Ageing in Southern Europe

A two-day event in Coimbra dedicated to the complex intersections of ageing and LGBTQI+ identities, in Southern Europe and beyond.

Plenary Session A | Keynote: Andrew King

Inaugural keynote speaker, ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—”๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด (University of Surrey), gave a thought-provoking presentation on LGBTQI+ ageing titled โ€œPutting LGBTQ+ Ageing in (and out) of Contextโ€.

Andrew King, Head of Department, and Professor of Sociology, University of Surrey (UK); CoDirector of the Centre for Research on Ageing and Generations (CRAG) and the Centre of Excellence on Ageing (CEA); and Co-Chair of the Sex, Gender and Sexualities Research Group (SGS); member of the International Advisory Board of Projects REMEMBER and TRACE.

Plenary Session C | Keynote Mojca Urek

Keynote speaker, Professor Mojca Urek (University of Ljubliana) marked the day with her presentation โ€œBetween Pride and Closet: Experiences of the Older LGBT+ Generation with Social and Health Careโ€.

Mojca Urek, Associate Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Social Work, University of Ljubljana (SLO); co-founder of the Womenโ€™s Counselling Service in Ljubljana; Chair of Research at the European Network for Training, Evaluation, and Research in Mental Health; member of the International Advisory Board of Project TRACE.

Plenary Session D | Research Roundtable – Project TRACE

Research roundtable dedicated to TRACE – Tracing Queer Citizenship over Time: Ageing, ageism and age-related LGBTI+ politics in Europe, titled “Tales from Fieldwork: Drawing on Methodological and Personal Challenges.” – an insightful session that explored the complexities (and perks) of conducting research on LGBTQI+ ageing across Southern Europe.

With Prof. Ana Cristina Santos, Dr Joana Brilhante, Dr Pako Chalkidis, Anลพe Jurฤek and Irene Massa.

Plenary Session E | Policy Roundtable

Policy Roundtable featuring distinguished representatives from Opus Diversidades (Portugal), Fundaciรณn 26 (Spain) and Proud Seniors (Greece). This session was pivotal in linking policy frameworks to the lived experiences of LGBTQI+ elders in Southern Europe.

Plenary Session F | Tribute to Ken Plummer

โ€œRemembering a pioneer of LGBTQ+ studies and critical humanism. A tribute to Ken Plummerโ€, delivered by Christian Klesse, Sociology Department, Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), acknowledging Ken Plummer’s monumental contributions to LGBTQI+ studies and sociology.
