Ana Cristina Santos at 6th International Conference Sexuality & Social Work: “Ageing Queerly: Living Archives of Resistance, Struggle and Joy”

Ana Cristina Santos – Portugal
Title: Queer Joy as Archives of Resistance: Insights from Older Queers in Portugal

At the 6th International Conference Sexuality & Social Work (Ljubljana, 1 – 4 July 2025),  Dr Ana Cristina Santos presented on the idea of queer joy as a political and historical archive.
Drawing from Portuguese LGBTQI+ elders’ life stories, she argued that joy – often overlooked in research on marginalised communities – is a form of resistance, a survival strategy, and a bridge across generations.

This contribution was part of the panel “Ageing Queerly: Living Archives of Resistance, Struggle and Joy”, bringing queer ageing into the heart of the congress theme: Resilience and Resistance: Reproductive Justice and Sexuality in Social Work.
