Irene Massa – Italy
Title: The Invisibility Triangle: Being Queer, Older and Islander in Italy
At the 6th International Conference Sexuality & Social Work (Ljubljana, 1 – 4 July 2025), TRACE researcher Irene Massa explored the intersecting invisibilities faced by LGBTQI+ elders living on Italian islands.
Drawing on life stories collected for the European Research Council-funded TRACE project, her work revealed how geographic isolation, age, and queer identity can combine to create unique forms of marginalisation.
This contribution was part of the panel “Ageing Queerly: Living Archives of Resistance, Struggle and Joy”, bringing queer ageing into the heart of the congress theme: Resilience and Resistance: Reproductive Justice and Sexuality in Social Work.
