Abstract:

Aging issues are increasingly becoming a focus of study in the social sciences field. However, the topic of older people’s sexuality remains socially silenced, due to the ageist dominant perspectives. As a result, institutional reality forces an adaptation of the behavior of older people, particularly challenging for LGBTQIA+ older people, realizing that, in most cases, they feel obliged to hide their identity. Therefore, this study is aimed at understanding, through semi-structured interviews with professionals from residential institutions for older people, how sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and/or sex characteristics influence the lives of institutionalized older people.

Key-words: LGBTQIA+; Aging; Sexuality; Institutionalization
