Greece: LGBTQI+ and Ageing in a Nutshell

Author: Pako Chalkidis

This Research Summary provides an overview of LGBTQI+ in Greece from 1950 onwards. It covers major developments such as criminalisation, legal and social repression, the path to decriminalisation, and the influence of the European Union, modernisation, and democratisation on LGBTQ rights. The report also provides an overview on older people’s rights in Greece over time and places a particular focus on the experiences of older LGBTQI+ individuals, highlighting the importance of ageing as a priority in current policy and research.

This Summary is part of the research carried by project TRACE – Tracing Queer Citizenship over Time: Ageing, ageism and age-related LGBTI+ politics in Europe, based at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Project TRACE produced 6 Research Summaries on Portugal, Italy, Greece, Malta, Slovenia and the European Union.
