Ana Cristina Santos at the 16th ESA Conference: “Ain’t I a Queer? Getting Old at the Crossroads of Queer Pride and Ageist Pain”

On August 28, 2024, Professor Ana Cristina Santos, PI of project TRACE, presented her paper titled “𝗔𝗶𝗻’𝘁 𝗜 𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿? 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻” at the 16th European Sociological Association Conference in Porto, Portugal.

This paper discussed the tension experienced by older LGBTQI+ individuals in Portugal, who often feel torn between their self-identity and societal expectations related to age and ageing. Cristina highlighted the vulnerability of this population in the face of populism, anti-gender backlash, and extreme-right ideologies.

Drawing on biographic narrative interviews, this research focuses on the experiences of ageing with pride and pain, advocating for more inclusive policies and democratic societies.
