Asylum Holes: Spaces of Belonging and Difference

Dr Pako Chalkidis contributed with the book chapter “Asylum Holes: Spaces of Belonging and Difference”, to Queer and Trans Life: Anthropological Futures (EASA Series, 53), edited by Silvia Posocco, EJ Gonzalez-Polledo, Lars Aaberg, and Tunay Altay. This is the first book published by the European Network for Queer Anthropology (ENQA) under the umbrella of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA). This landmark volume, published by Berghahn Books in 2025, explores the intersections of queer and trans anthropology with questions of crisis, futurity, and marginality.

Chalkidis’ chapter critically examines asylum spaces as contested sites of belonging and exclusion. Through a queer and trans anthropological lens, the chapter interrogates how these spaces operate as both zones of precarious survival and potential refuge, shaped by intersecting power structures. As part of this groundbreaking collection, Chalkidis’ work contributes to ongoing discussions on the lived realities and future trajectories of queer and trans life within anthropological thought.
