Project TRACE researchers, Professor Ana Cristina Santos (PI), Dr Joana Brilhante, and Junior Researcher Irene Massa, participated in an interview for Zona Livre, where they discussed TRACE’s ongoing research into the lives of older LGBTQI+ people and specifically lesbian women across Europe. As the project enters its third year, the team is uncovering key insights into the challenges these women face regarding ageing, activism, and legal rights.
In the interview, the researchers share their firsthand experiences from conducting in-depth interviews with participants from different countries. They highlight the complexities of navigating social, legal, and intimate landscapes in the context of LGBTQI+ ageing.
From the evolving experiences of lesbian women in Portugal, shared by Ana Cristina Santos, to the challenges of conducting research in Italy as experienced by Irene Massa, the conversation emphasizes the importance of preserving these vital narratives. Joana Brilhante also reflects on the disconnect between legal rights and social realities in Malta, stressing the importance of public policy and advocacy.
