This opinion article invites us to look back so that we can move forward with greater clarity and understanding.

“Remembering so as not to forget” – this is the motto of the article that reminds us of the significant sociolegal and cultural transformations that Portugal has witnessed since the beginning of democracy, founded on the Principle of Equality of the Constitution of 1976. Researcher Ana Cristina Santos proposes a different approach. Instead of simply listing achievements, she invites us to “look around” and trace “a biography of affections”. This challenges us to reflect on the true meaning of living through these last 50 years in democracy. What have we felt? What has changed within us and around us? What were the affections that shaped us and that we shaped?
