28 June 1969, Stonewall Inn, United States. This is the turning point in the history of the LGBTQIAP+ community. In the early hours of the morning, gays, lesbians, trans people, transvestites and drag queens clashed with the police and started a rebellion that would lay the foundations for the LGBTQIAP+ rights movement in the United States and around the world. The episode that became known Stonewall Rebellion or Stonewall Riot, which is considered to be the movement’s ground zero, lasted six days and came about as a response to the gratuitous and routine violence inflicted by the police on gay bars in New York. Since then, International LGBT Pride Day, celebrated every year on 28 June, is a symbol of the courage and resistance of those who took part in the demonstration, but it is also a time to remember that there is still a long way to go in the fight against discrimination, violence and inequality.
