Tracing Queer Citizenship over Time

Ageing, ageism and age-related LGBTI+ politics in Europe

TRACE is a 5 year research project (2023-2027), aiming at the analysis of LGBTQI+ ageing, ageism and age-related politics in Southern Europe. The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and coordinated by Prof. Ana Cristina Santos at the Center for Social Studies (CES) of the University of Coimbra – Portugal.

The countries included in this research are Portugal, Italy, Greece, Malta and Slovenia

The choice of countries is informed by traits of their common history as European countries historically immersed in traditional cultural frameworks and which have moved from repressive political or sociocultural regimes to regimes that offer LGBTI+ recognition in the 2000s and where the rise of extreme-right populism and anti-gender backlash can be observed in recent years.
